Understanding the Nature of God

Back to LDS With Questions

Why This Matters

Many Latter-day Saints grow up with a view of God that includes a Heavenly Father who was once a man, progressed to godhood, and invites us to do the same. But is that how the Bible describes God’s nature? This page explores how LDS teaching about God compares with the historic, biblical understanding of who God is—and why it matters for how we worship, trust, and relate to Him.

LDS Teaching vs. Biblical Teaching

In LDS Teaching

  • God the Father was once a man who progressed to godhood
  • God has a physical body of flesh and bones
  • Humans can become gods through exaltation
  • God is one of many gods who exist
  • The Godhead consists of three separate beings

In the Bible:

  • God is eternal and uncreated
  • God is spirit (not embodied like man)
  • There is only one true God
  • God has always been God
  • The one God exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Key Biblical Passages to Consider

  • Isaiah 43:10
  • Isaiah 44:6
  • Numbers 23:19
  • John 4:24
  • Psalm 90:2
  • Malachi 3:6

A Question to Reflect On

If God has always been God—and there is no other like Him—how might that shape our understanding of worship, identity, and what it means to be created in His image?
