Article of Faith 9: Continuing Revelation

Article of Faith 9

We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

At First Glance

This statement sounds hopeful—even exciting. It suggests that God is still speaking, still guiding, still revealing truth. And in one sense, that’s something Christians affirm.

God is not silent.
He leads, convicts, and guides His people.

So what’s the concern?

The concern is not whether God speaks. The concern is what kind of revelation is being claimed—and what authority it carries.

Why This Matters

This article answers a critical question: Can truth change over time?

Because if new revelation can:

  • modify
  • override
  • or replace

what God has already revealed… then truth becomes something that can shift.

What This Means in LDS Teaching

In Mormonism, revelation is not limited to understanding what God has already said. It includes ongoing, authoritative revelation through modern prophets.

These revelations can:

  • clarify doctrine
  • adjust teachings
  • refine church practices
  • and resolve apparent contradictions or even contradict revelation given to earlier prophets

As one LDS leader explained:

“Our protection from erroneous doctrine lies in… belief in continuing revelation to the current prophet.”
(Merrill C. Oaks, Ensign, Nov 1998)

The Living Prophet Takes Precedence

LDS teaching places strong emphasis on the authority of the current prophet.

Ezra Taft Benson, 13th president of the Church, taught:

“The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything…”

And more directly:

“The living prophet is more vital to us than the Standard Works…”

In other words: Current revelation can take precedence over previous revelation.

“Living Oracles” vs Written Scripture

This idea is illustrated in a well-known account involving early LDS leaders:

“When compared with the living oracles those books are nothing to me… I would rather have the living oracles than all the writing in the books.”
(Wilford Woodruff, recounting Brigham Young)

This reflects a central principle:

Living prophetic authority is considered more relevant than past Scripture.

The Critical Difference

Here is where the contrast becomes unmistakable.

Mormonism teaches:

  • God continues to reveal new doctrine through prophets
  • Later revelation can override earlier teaching
  • The current prophet is the most important voice
  • Truth can be refined or updated over time

The Bible teaches:

  • God’s truth is consistent and unchanging
  • New understanding does not contradict prior revelation
  • Scripture remains the standard for testing all claims
  • No later voice overrides what God has already spoken

This is not simply about ongoing guidance. It is about whether truth itself is fixed… or flexible.

What Scripture Reveals

God Does Not Change

“I the Lord do not change…”
(Malachi 3:6)

God’s nature—and His truth—remain consistent.

Truth Is Not Rewritten

“The sum of Your word is truth…”
(Psalm 119:160)

Truth is not something that evolves into something different.

The Faith Was Delivered Once for All

“The faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
(Jude 1:3)

This does not mean we stop growing in understanding. It means the core message itself is not replaced or redefined.

Even Spiritual Claims Must Be Tested

“Even if we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel… let him be accursed.”
(Galatians 1:8)

This is a strong warning. Not even a supernatural experience is allowed to override the gospel already given.

Why This Changes Everything

This comes down to a simple but profound question: Is truth something we receive… or something that can be revised?

If truth can be updated, then:

  • certainty becomes difficult
  • contradictions must be explained away
  • and authority shifts to whoever speaks last

But if truth is anchored in what God has already revealed:

  • it remains stable
  • it can be tested
  • and it does not depend on changing voices

A Gentle but Important Question

If a new teaching today contradicts what was taught before… which one is true? And how do you decide?

Final Thought

God does guide His people. He gives wisdom, direction, and understanding. But there is a difference between:

God helping us understand His Word
and
God replacing what He already said

One leads to clarity. The other leads to constant adjustment. And that difference matters more than it may seem at first.
